cléo: a journal of film and feminism

Online magazine

“[cléo] revives the project of applying an overtly feminist perspective to film in the vein of Nineties zine culture.” - Film Comment

I was a member of the founding editorial team that designed and managed cléo, an online feminist film website. The website published three themed issues a year, featuring long-form articles, interviews and round-table discussions.

As the managing editor I implemented a multi-part submission procedure, managed editorial workflow, assigned stories to writers based on prior relationships and experiences, proofread and edited articles at various stages of completion.

One of our major mandates was to mentor younger and/or inexperienced writers, to create a space for women and non-binary folks outside mainstream publication. As well, we established a working policy for "best practices" when using language around diversity and identity politics based on ongoing research and consultation with people and organizations representing marginalized groups.
